Father, Child Airlifted - Highway Shut Down Following I-35 Rollover
(New Braunfels, TX) -- A father and his two children are recovering at University Hospital in San Antonio after their SUV rolled over yesterday afternoon along I-35, in the northern tip of the county.
Just before 12 noon, a male driver and his two children were headed southbound in the 5-thousand block of I-35 North near the TA Truck Stop when he struck the center wall dividing the highway. The impact of that collision caused the SUV to rollover onto the driver’s side, trapping the family inside the vehicle.
New Braunfels Police, Fire, and EMS personnel arrived on scene, and firefighters went to work extricating the man and the two children by using “the jaws of life.” Police officers had all lanes of southbound I-35 closed off in the area, with all traffic being rerouted onto the access road in order to make way for 2 Airlife helicopters, which landed directly on the mainlanes of the highway.
The father and one of the children were each airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio in critical condition, while the other child was taken to the same hospital by ground EMS with non-life threatening injuries.
Crews cleared the scene about two hours later and all lanes of the highway were reopened around 1:30pm. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
