San Marcos City Council Turns Down Sessom Road Rezoning Request
(San Marcos, TX) -- The San Marcos Mercury reports that a large 63-million dollar, 17-thousand square foot mixed commercial and retail development along Sessom Drive has been sent back to the drawing board after City Council turned down the developer’s request to rezone the property that project was set to be built on. San Marcos City Council split its vote, 4 to 3, after more than 200 people made their way to City Hall, mostly to protest the proposed project. Despite the support of city staff, the city’s Planning and Zoning Commission, and the city’s economic development director, City Council says concerns about the project’s impact on traffic in that area and environmental concerns because of its proximity to Sessom Creek led to the decision against rezoning the property. That doesn’t necessarily stop the development, but it does put the brakes on the plan, and the developer will have to decide if he wants to bring the proposed project back before City Council for another rezoning request after amending the development plan.
