Tuesday's HS Sports Round-Up
The Canyon Cougarettes are moving on to the Area Round, winning their first post-season game in three years after defeating Kerrville Tivy 54-45 in the 1st round of the Region IV playoffs last night at Littleton Gym in San Antonio. The Cougarettes got a well balanced scoring attack from Kelsey Flanagan, Jackie Schaake and Chamaya Turner who scored 14, 14 and 13 points respectively. Canyon advances to the 2nd round where the Cougarettes will meet Lake Travis, 64-43 winners over Austin Travis.
The New Braunfels Christian Academy basketball teams both won their 1st round playoff games last night as well; the Academy girls erased a six point halftime deficit to beat Temple Central Texas 52-47; Kendall Warren led the Wildcats with 23 points. The Academy boys put together a dominant first half en route to a 67-37 thumping of Austin Brentwood. The Wildcats jumped out to a 28-1 lead by the end of the 1st quarter, and led at halftime 44-9. Zach Cresap led the Academy with 20 points and Jonathan Abraham added 15 for the Wildcats who have now won 13 straight games.
The New Braunfels Unicorn boys came up just short of clinching a playoff berth last night, losing their regular season finale on the road at Judson 55-53. Koby Pacheco led New Braunfels with 15 points…although the Unicorns lost last night, they can still make the post-season; New Braunfels will play Steele in a play-in game later this week as both the Unicorns and Knights finished in a tie for the district’s fourth and final playoff spot with a 4-6 record in 25-5A play. A site and time for that game has yet to be announced.
The High School Softball season is underway; the Smithson Valley Rangers opened the 2012 season with an 8-2 victory over New Braunfels last night at Unicorn Field. The Rangers racked up 12 hits including 4 home runs, courtesy of Whitney Repole, Megan Hill, Lindsey Hood and Taylor Darilek. A score from Canyon’s opener at Round Rock Stony Point was unavailable.
In boys High School soccer, last night’s district opener between Canyon and Smithson Valley ended in a 1-1 tie at Cougar Stadium; the girls match between Canyon and Smithson Valley at Ranger Stadium saw the Rangers come out on top by a score of 2-1. New Braunfels’ soccer teams were swept at Alamo Heights last night, the boys lost 3-1, the Unicorn girls lost 4-1. Canyon Lake’s soccer teams lost their district openers to Clemens, the Hawk boys were beaten 1-nil, the girls lost 2-nil.
