Tuesday's HS Sports Round-Up

BOYS BASKETBALL
The Canyon Cougars are headed to Round 2 after dispatching San Antonio McCollum in last night’s playoff opener by a final of 51-34 at Littleton Gym in San Antonio. Andrew Poulter led the Cougars with 18 points, Ian Gullick scored 12 for Canyon which will next play Austin LBJ in the Area Round; LBJ won its playoff opener over Austin Vandergrift last night 68-40. Smithson Valley’s boys didn’t fare as well last night, the Rangers were eliminated from the playoffs after suffering an 81-53 1st round loss to Brennan last night at Boerne Champion High School. Smithson Valley was led by AC Reid who scored 26 points; the Rangers finish the season with a record of 17-16.

SOCCER
In high school soccer results from last night, both the New Braunfels boys and girls teams won their district openers over San Marcos; the Unicorn boys got goals from Tim Schaffer, Chance McCarter and Christian Cantu in a 3-nil shutout of the Rattlers 3-nil; the Unicorn girls also beat San Marcos in a shutout, winning by a score of 5-nil; Bonnie Charlton and Sara Gribbon each scored a pair of goals in the victory. Canyon’s soccer teams both won last night as well posting wins over Canyon Lake, the Cougar boys won their match 1-nil, the Cougarettes won by a 3-nil score. Smithson Valley’s teams split their two matches against Dripping Springs last night, the Ranger boys won 3-nil, the Ranger girls lost 1-nil.

BASEBALL/SOFTBALL
In area softball last night, Smithson Valley defeated New Braunfels for the second time this season by a score of 10-5 at Ranger Field…the New Braunfels Unicorn baseball team won its season opener over Madison last night 3-2 at Unicorn Field; Nick De LaCerda doubled and drove in a pair of runs; pitcher Ralph Garza struck out 11 in six innings of work, giving up just 1 hit and an un-earned run.
